Ultra-portable music using iPad 2 and GarageBand with external midi controller.
What can I say... it was raining and I didn't want to get out of bed. So I wrote this sad song. The entire rig is completely portable. The PCR-300 is connected via the CCK to a USB hub. That in turn is powered by a portable Li-Ion battery pack. One of the advantages of using an external midi controller is that you play over the smart instruments.

Good Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) software?

Audacity isn't meant for music editing.
I've tried getting demos of Cubase or something, but I never really figured them out.
I also tried a trial of FL Studio 9, but I think that's more for MAKING beats/songs than mixing/editing them.
If anyone knows where to get a trial of Pro Tools, that would be nice. I heard it was really good...but I don't wanna spend tons of money on it before trying it.
I need something.

Whammer Jammer MidiNotate file
For those trying to learn this song, this may help out with the rhythm part. Whammer Jammer in a MidiNotate file clip, played at 70% speed, shows the notes. This is done on computer program, I dont think the notes are 100% right on but are for the most part accurate. Good tool for trying to disect this song. If anyone wants it slower, I can do that, or just the harp line only. I'm also working on a new Whammer tab, hopefully to be released sometime soon.

okay, so what used to happen, is when the midi editor was open, i would press on a division in the beat, using the grids to help show where they were, and just drag across how long i wanted the sound to last. I use Reason 4.0, and with Reason 4.0 there was a way to use your PC keyboard as a midi control keyboard. Even though it was not suppose to be possible.
So is there any way to get Pro-Tools to open without the Interface?
I only need to use it to Re-master a few of my songs, and thats it.

I'm using an O2 M-Audio midi controller, and a Tascam US-122 audio interface, and I'm running Cubase on a laptop with a Pentium M processor and 512 mb of RAM. No matter how few programs I'm running, I always get a half-second delay whenever I press the keys on my midi controller. Please help!
