Logic/ Pro Tools/ Reason, whats the deal with 'samples'?

Question by inglourious basterd: Logic/ Pro Tools/ Reason, whats the deal with 'samples'?
I'm new to music software but looking to buy logic, pro tools or reason and I'm struggling to understand the concept of samples.

Surely if everyone used the samples that came music making software everyone would make similar songs, but obviously this doesn't happen so how are unique sounds made?
