Q&A: can someone please explain midi controllers to me?

Question by Peace Maker: can someone please explain midi controllers to me?
I keep going to buy synths/keyboards then BAM I find out they're Midi controllers... What are they? How are they used?
Ok another question.... Are they able to be used as an actual instrument?
Example, can they be run through anything to generate the sounds I may be looking for?
