Why is music recording software so expensive?

Don't they know that most musicians are poor? :/

I currently have Cubase LE (free edition that came with my FireBox). Cubase 4 costs a whopping $ 600. Although I have been pleased with the intuitiveness of the Cubase interface, I'm going to make either MixCraft 4 or Reaper my next purchase ($ 65, $ 230 respectively). The only thing I'm concerned about is MIDI support, which I know the current version of Reaper is now
