What does non volatile memory mean on a midi controller?

Question by lolisfun: What does non volatile memory mean on a midi controller?
I am looking into buying a memory controller but trying to figure out the specifications. The CME UF-60 claims it has "Over 20 user template, non-volatile memories". Now, does this mean I can access these WITHOUT my laptop, or does it just make a reference to all the settings that will be used with my laptop.
