How do I use a MIDI controller to play different notes of a sound that I recorded?

Question by elle: How do I use a MIDI controller to play different notes of a sound that I recorded?
Basically i want to create a synthesizer using a person's voice.

I believe I can do that by getting the person to sing every note on a scale and then assigning each note to a corresponding key on the controller (using Garageband).
